Affective movement mapping is an artistic research method focused on exploring the dynamic interplay between landscape and the human bodymind. This approach incorporates the physical act of pressing a notebook against the body while allowing a pen to move freely in response to bodily movements, generating compositions that are both random and influenced by affective engagement. Rather than organizing or representing a place, these mappings offer lively, non-anthropocentric depictions of time-space-events.
Affective movement mapping method was initially developed in 2023 as a part of a research project as an attempt to tune into more-than-human events within an art classroom. In the spring of 2024, at Evo Forest in South Finland, the project expanded through the exploration of mapping over extended periods while walking.
Inspired by inefficient mapping – a methodological protocol developed by Linda Knight (2021) – this method allows bringing artistic practice and speculative theories together, and to generate a critical, creative praxis to study the complexities of multispecies encounters.
